Water softeners are devices created to reduce the hardness of water. Water hardness is caused by high levels of dissolved minerals, primarily both calcium and magnesium. These minerals can cause a range of problems, such as deposits in pipes and appliances, and rough skin and hair. Water softeners operate by using a process called ion exchange.
